Tampa’s urban core, including Downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods, are:
- The hub of commerce, culture & government for the Tampa Bay region
- Increasingly, a place where people are choosing to work, live & play
- The center of our existing transit network
- Crisscrossed by bus & freight rail lines.
Future plans call for the introduction of new transit technologies & intermodal centers focused on downtown. What is the best way to make use of and tie all these assets & opportunities together?
The purpose of this study was to identify opportunities for expansion and/or extension of the existing transit assets focused on downtown Tampa including current rail and rubber-wheeled systems, use of existing freight rail corridors, integration with existing rubber-wheeled systems, and other technologies using the existing streetcar system as its core.
The study was co-sponsored by the MPO and the Tampa Downtown Partnership, with guidance from the City of Tampa, HART, FDOT and the Tampa Historic Streetcar board. Recommendations will feed into the MPO’s long range plan and HART’s Transit Development Plan.
