A final version of the Smart Cities Mobility Plan is now available! The Smart Cities Study Survey is also complete and the results are included in the Plan.
Smart Cities technologies can help create a system that is safe, comfortable and convenient for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders & automobile drivers.
Existing & cutting-edge technologies like navigation apps, real-time traffic management, smart street lights & many others can solve real-world problems by providing information to travelers, improving communication among road users, planning trips, and facilitating payments.
The purpose of Hillsborough TPO’s forthcoming Smart Cities Mobility Plan is to identify & understand these technologies so they can be used to solve the problems facing our residents. This plan is an update to the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Master Plan which was last updated in 2013.

What does the plan include?
- Development of a Smart Cities Vision Plan that can be created in 5 years
- Identifying areas of opportunity and applying the correct technologies to solve problems facing residents & visitors of Hillsborough County
- Create a map of all current & planned deployments to ensure there is synergy among the technologies
- We will invite partner agencies & local decisionmakers to a workshop to build a coalition of support for the 5-year vision

Community Involvement
Great American Teach-in
Staff participated in the Great American Teach-In on November 19, 2020 as part of the community outreach effort for the Smart Cities Plan. Due to the health pandemic, classes were held virtually. Staff presented to 16 classes at Tampa Bay Tech, sharing information on Smart City Technologies and how they can improve quality of life for residents and commuters. Students also shared their feedback via a survey on their preference and concerns about the various technologies currently used.

Smart Cities Master Plan was presented to the Policy committee on Aug 11, 2021
The Plan will be circulated through TPO Advisory Committees in April and will be presented to the board for adoption in May
