The January 5th Planning Commission InfoBBQ (Brown Bag Quarterly) drew nearly 50 planners and citizens concerned with bicycle and pedestrian safety in our region. Dr. Heather Rothenberg, a nationally recognized expert in safety data systems and performance measures, spoke about Vision Zero, an approach to road safety that began in Sweden in 1997.

At the core of the worldwide Vision Zero movement is the belief that death and injury on city streets is preventable. For the most part, these are not accidents. Collisions are often the result of poor behaviors and unforgiving roadway designs. Dr. Rothenberg approached the problem from multiple angles – street designs that emphasize safety, predictability, and the potential for human error, coupled with targeted education and date-driven enforcement.
