May 2021 – Planning Commission staff is working with Hillsborough County subject matter experts to prepare updates to three sections of the plan – Coastal Management, Solid Waste, and Recreation and Open Space – as part of the April 2021 cycle of plan amendments. Learn about each section update and how to register for the virtual public meetings in the links below. Visit the Hillsborough County Comprehensive Plan project page to learn more about the overall update.

Recreation and Open Space

The Recreation and Open Space Section serves to update the Recreation and Open Space Element of the Unincorporated Hillsborough County Comprehensive Plan. This section provides a framework for long-range planning of recreation parks, conservation parks, recreational trails, and preserves. The language was developed via a collaborative approach with staff from Hillsborough County’s Parks & Recreation and Conservation & Environmental Lands Management.

The overarching goal of the updated section is to ensure an integrated system of recreation and resource-based parks that are accessible, inclusive, equitable, and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors in the community. This is supported by concepts in the update such as safe and equitable access, diverse programming opportunities, continued inclusive engagement and involvement, strategic partnerships, and integrating parks with the built environment in a manner that enhances the overall community.

The public is invited to provide feedback and comments on the draft language, which can be viewed on the Recreation and Open Space Section project page. We will hold a virtual public engagement kickoff meeting on Wednesday, June 2 at 6 pm. Register here to attend. The public will have an opportunity to comment and ask questions in a virtual format. Comments and questions can also be submitted using the form on the project page.
