TPO supports funding for bus maintenance and evaluating Gibsonton Drive widening

March 2022 – The Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) passed three Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) amendments to fund the construction of a new HART maintenance facility and a study that will look at widening Gibsonton Dr.

The HART facility, located on 21st Ave. in East Tampa, serves as HART’s primary maintenance facility. A State of Good Repair project, the facility reconstruction tops the TPO’s TIP Priority List due to the existing facility’s heavy flooding, cracking concrete, low ceilings, and poor design. HART requested the amendments, which reallocates $4 million in this year’s funding  previously designated to replace old buses.

The Gibsonton Drive Widening Study, requested by Hillsborough County and funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), will look at factors involved in the widening of the road from Fern Hill Drive, just east of I-75, to U.S. 301. These factors include research of the most current engineering standards, project costs, and ways to limit impacts to the environment. The study will also involve public input throughout the research process.

The TPO approved the amendments at its monthly board meeting on March 9, 2022.  The unanimous vote allows the TPO to add the amendments to the 2021/22-2025/26 Transportation Improvement Program, documenting the addition of state and/or federal funds.
