June 2019 – Much of the River Board’s success is due to its tireless and dedicated volunteers. Since 1986, a string of devoted people have freely given their time to maintain, and improve, the Hillsborough River for all to enjoy. The Board is composed of three elected officials, one from the Tampa City Council, one from the Temple Terrace City Council, and one from the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. We’re happy to welcome back City Councilman Guido Maniscalco following his recent volunteering and appointment for another term on the River Board representing the City of Tampa. First appointed in November of 2016, Councilman Maniscalco will continue his focus on maintaining and improving the lower river in the City of Tampa.
The River Board receives recommendations from its Technical Advisory Council (TAC). The TAC is composed of one citizen representing each of the three local government jurisdictions and several environmental agency staff persons, including the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission, and Port Tampa Bay, to name a few.
We’re also celebrating the reappointment of Dr. Richard Brown to the River Board’s Technical Advisory Council (TAC). First appointed to the River Board’s TAC in July of 2010, Dr. Brown has long served as the TAC’s Chairperson. He’s a steadfast advocate for maintaining and improving the water quality of the lower river, and ensuring adequate fresh water flow. Dr. Brown also lends his time to the Friends of the Hillsborough River, a group largely responsible to establishing a minimum flow of freshwater in the lower river and the river’s subsequent environmental recovery.
